RotB - Bird backstory storyboard

In the book the dog describes himself as 'keen' and the frog as 'clean'. The bird however states that she is 'as green as can be' . While we were looking for a way to connect the green colour to her personality, we noticed one of Axel Scheffler's illustration that showed the bird peeking out from a tree hole as the bow comes flying by. 

We thought it would be nice to explain how the bird ended up alone in this tree hole and came up with her little backstory.

RotB - Storyboard comparison - The Frog

I love frogs. They are probably my favourite animals next to newts.

The first part of this sequence was animated by our good friend and animation supervisor Tobias von Burkersroda, who already worked as lead animator on The Gruffalo. The second part was animated by Waldemar Fast, who I've been friends with since we met at the Filmakademie in Ludwigsburg in 2005. The end of the sequence, once they are back on the broom, was animated by Thomas Hinke, another old friend from Filmakademie and Gruffalo days. Each part of this sequence had its own challenges (my obsession with frogs being one of them), and I couldn't be happier with what they've done.

All three of them are incredibly talented, funny and great to work with!!!

RotB - Storyboard Comparison - The Lake

It's always very interesting for me to compare the initial storyboards to the final animation. Lot's of stuff is already there, but then more and more gets added during the production. 

All the shots of Witch and Cat were animated by Jacob Frey. It's so amazing to see, how he captured the essence of those sketches and brought them to life. An incredible Animator!
